An Ethiopian delegation, led by Ambassador Hirut Zemene, the nation's Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), is currently participating in an induction program for new members of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) in Arusha, Tanzania.
During the program, Ambassador Hirut expressed Ethiopia’s appreciation for the confidence shown by the AU in electing the nation as a member of the Peace and Security Council. She reaffirmed Ethiopia’s strong commitment and significant contributions to collective security efforts across Africa and globally, both through diplomatic channels and in peacekeeping operations.
Addressing the council, Ambassador Hirut urged the body to adopt a more proactive stance by initiating early responses to emerging crises, thereby preventing their escalation into full-blown conflicts. She further emphasized the critical need for increased investment in sustaining peace through robust conflict prevention strategies.
The ambassador also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure effective and efficient financing for the Peace and Security Council's work, particularly given the current global and continental landscape. She suggested that the Council should strategically assess its role within the evolving global geopolitical situation to enhance its relevance and strengthen the collective interests of the African continent.
At the induction program, Ethiopia and Eswatini were warmly welcomed as new incoming members of the Peace and Security Council. Cameroon and Nigeria were also acknowledged as re-elected members.
Ethiopia has been participating in the PSC as an observer throughout March and is set to officially commence its membership in April 2025.
The induction program featured an address by Cosato David Chumi, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Tanzania, who attended as a guest of honor. The program is designed to provide newly elected PSC members with a comprehensive understanding of the council’s mandate, its roles and responsibilities, working priorities and methods, as well as its relationship with the AU Commission.
