Women’s rights advocates have called for a stronger commitment to empowering women across various sectors, emphasizing the urgent need for increased investment in their development.
Zeyneba Shukur, a Standing Committee Member for Women's Affairs at the Addis Ababa City Council, highlighted the importance of deeper efforts to address gender inequalities. Speaking at the 114th International Women’s Day event, organized by the Ethiopian Women Development Organization (EWDO) in partnership with EngenderHealth, she acknowledged the critical role women play in society. However, she pointed out that harmful traditional practices, gender-based violence, and weak governance continue to hinder women’s full participation in development.

Huluageresh Tazez, CEO of EWDO, also underscored the significant contributions of women in social, economic, and political spheres. She emphasized the need to increase women’s participation in digital technology and called for greater access to education, employment, and digital resources. She urged continued advocacy and collaboration to overcome barriers and ensure women are fully empowered to drive societal change.
A panel discussion on human rights and gender equality was also held, where panelists explored national efforts and future directions for advancing women’s rights.
EWDO marked International Women’s Day for the 49th time in Ethiopia and the 114th time globally. The event, attended by religious leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, was held under the theme: "Rapid and sustainable inclusive transformation is achieved through women's participation."
