Ethiopia’s Iconic Singer, Getachew Kassa, Dies at 80

Famous Ethiopian singer, Getachew Kassa, died at 80, EBC World learnt. Born in 1944 in Addis Ababa, Getachew surprised fans with resounding music record victories until recently. He is one of the few Ethiopian artists with a tributary song to Africa’s diplomatic capital, Addis Ababa.

A stylist Ethiopian singer and percussionist, Getachew was hospitalized at the Yekatit 12 Memorial located at the intersection of Russian Street, Entoto Avenue, King Street and George Street and Weatheral Street, before he drew his last breath.

Kassa was famous at the height of 1960s and 1970s after landing jobs at the country's famous clubs, the Sombrino and Axum Hall, which catapulted him to the height of fame, while at the same time enhancing his professional skills.

Tiz Balegn Gize and Yekereme Fiqir are some of his other songs that endeared him to fans.
