Ethiopia officially joins BRICS come January

Ethiopia is set to formally join the BRICS bloc on January 1, 2024.

Originally consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS extended invitations to six additional countries in August.

While Argentina declined the invitation, Ethiopia along with other countries took up the opportunity.

In addition to Ethiopia, Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iran will officially join the BRICS the coming Monday.

Current members Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa in August invited six other nations to become part of their group.

Only Argentina declined the invitation after President Javier Milei, who took office this month, reversed his predecessor's membership bid.

In 2006, Brazil, Russia, India and China created the "Bric" group. South Africa joined in 2010, making it "Brics".

No name for the expanded group has been announced so far, but there are speculations that it could be "Brics +".
