Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest and most profitable airline, is set to launch its first direct flight from Addis Ababa to Hanoi on July 10, 2025, following approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. This significant new air link will see the return flight to Addis Ababa departing on the same day.
The establishment of this direct route marks a pivotal moment in strengthening air connectivity between the African continent and Southeast Asia. It's widely expected to foster increased trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges between Ethiopia and Vietnam, and by extension, between Africa and the broader Southeast Asian region.
Beyond the new route, Ethiopian Airlines is actively engaging in discussions with Vietnam Airlines to explore future cooperation and network expansion opportunities, indicating a commitment to deepening their presence in the Vietnamese market.
As a proud member of the Star Alliance, the airline boasts a modern fleet of over 140 aircraft, including advanced Airbus A350s and Boeing B787s. It currently operates international passenger and cargo services to 80 global destinations, alongside 28 domestic routes across Ethiopia.
This new direct connection underscores the growing economic and diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Ethiopia. Recent high-level discussions have focused on bolstering bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including economy, trade, investment, agriculture, science and technology, education, and cultural exchange. Both nations have expressed keen interest in negotiating key agreements, such as free trade agreements, investment facilitation and protection deals, and double taxation avoidance agreements, to further lubricate economic interactions.
