Amhara Region Rallies for Peace as Government Vows Decisive Action Against "Extremist Elements"

Thousands across Ethiopia's Amhara region have taken to the streets yesterday in peaceful demonstrations, vocally expressing their support for the federal government's peace and stability initiatives.

These widespread rallies come as the government reaffirms its commitment to addressing the pressing demands of the Ethiopian people for peace, development, and good governance, particularly in the face of ongoing instability attributed to armed groups.

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) Government Communication Service (GCS) issued a statement acknowledging the demonstrations and the significant disruption to daily life, education, and economic activities caused by recent unrest in the Amhara region. The government squarely placed the blame on "extremist elements" it says are co-opting the respected "Fano" name historically a symbol of patriotic resistance to undermine constitutional governance and serve foreign interests.

The GCS statement commended the resilience of the Amhara people, noting their consistent rejection of violence and their strong emphasis on peace and dialogue. It highlighted extensive grassroots consultations and the active participation of citizens in the ongoing National Dialogue process. The government also reported that many young individuals previously swayed into joining armed factions have since returned to peaceful civilian life, guided by community elders and religious leaders.

While acknowledging the sacrifices and coordinated efforts of federal and regional security forces in restoring relative calm to most areas, the government conceded that full peace remains elusive. Insecurity in certain locales continues to impede free movement, educational access, and economic progress.

Marchers, representing the broad concerns of the region, called for sustained peace, enhanced security, the reopening of schools, and the protection of livelihoods. They also expressed their readiness to collaborate with authorities to uphold the rule of law and counter both internal disruptions and external interference.

The government expressed gratitude for the public's peaceful and constructive engagement, reiterating its responsibility to respond decisively to the concerns raised. It affirmed a strengthened commitment to meeting the people's demands for peace and development through coordinated efforts with the regional administration, security forces, and local communities.

The GCS concluded by stating that while dialogue remains the preferred path, the government will take firm action against those who continue to reject peaceful solutions and threaten the nation’s progress.
