Ethiopia's ambitious Green Legacy initiative is set to transcend national borders, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) proclaiming it will become a defining African cultural trait, serving as a powerful example for other nations on the continent.
The declaration came during this year's Green Legacy launch program, held under the theme "Renewal Through Planting," which saw the participation of Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima alongside Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Abiy underscored the transformative potential of the initiative. "When the second phase of the Green Legacy program concludes next year, the successes achieved by Ethiopia will inspire other African nations to follow suit, solidifying Africa's role as a continent that nourishes, provides, and leads—truly making it an African culture," he stated.
He further emphasized the spirit driving the movement, asserting, "We start and we finish; we start and we teach; we start and we revitalize; this is what being an Ethiopian is."
Reflecting on past environmental challenges, the Prime Minister noted that Ethiopia's past reliance on external support stemmed from a collective failure to respect and coexist with nature, which had long sustained the nation.
He confidently projected that upon the successful completion of the Green Legacy initiative, Ethiopia will proudly announce its complete self-sufficiency in food production to the world.
The launch event was attended by a host of high-ranking government officials, including Supreme Court President Tewodros Mihret, Coordinator for Democratic System Building Center and Deputy President of the Prosperity Party Adem Farah, and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, signifying the broad governmental commitment to the initiative.
