Ethiopian Government Committed to Eradicating Corruption, PM Abiy Affirms

The Ethiopian government is more committed than ever to combating corruption, which Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today described as a "critical breakdown" severely harming the nation's interests. Prime Minister Abiy detailed the administration's robust, three-phase strategy aimed at eradicating graft, a force he characterized as eroding values, morals, and trust, and acting as a major impediment to Ethiopia's progress.

Prime Minister Abiy explained that the initial phase of this comprehensive anti-corruption drive targets governmental and institutional corruption. He stated confidently that "currently, there is no governmental corruption in Ethiopia," though he clarified this assertion does not imply the absence of corrupt individuals within official capacities. The second phase focuses on actively reducing pervasive petty corruption and minor theft through systemic solutions, with the "Mesob one-stop service" cited as a prime example designed to eliminate opportunities for illicit dealings. The third and most extensive phase involves cultivating a deep-seated cultural aversion to corruption, a long-term goal that will require a profound societal shift in narrative and values. The Prime Minister expressed optimism that these multifaceted efforts will be immensely beneficial for Ethiopia's continued growth and prosperity.

Beyond the government's steadfast commitment to fighting corruption, Prime Minister Abiy also offered a comprehensive look into the ruling Prosperity Party's unique vision and ongoing national initiatives. He described the Prosperity Party as "miraculous," highlighting its distinct approach in vision, organization, size, and tangible results compared to previous political entities. He noted the party's significant growth, now boasting 16.3 million members following its second general assembly. "Prosperity is an inclusive and embracing party, free from ethnic extremism, committed to a national narrative," he asserted, adding that it has proven its dedication to democracy by bringing marginalized groups to the forefront. He proudly stated that it is Africa's largest party, characterized by its all-encompassing nature, clear operational systems, and policies articulated in detail. The party's very name, he explained, is tied to its vision of leading Ethiopia to prosperity.

The Prime Minister underscored Prosperity's commitment to broad participation, noting that the party's decision to include opposition parties in government demonstrates its openness to all citizens – a choice, he stressed, made by all leaders and members. He added that the party actively embraces youth and Ethiopian citizens globally, remaining open to new ideas and perspectives. Abiy expressed confidence that the Prosperity Party, with its indigenous vision, holds great promise and will serve as an example for other African nations.

In a moment of personal reflection, Prime Minister Abiy also shared his profound appreciation for the ongoing Addis Ababa Riverside Development. "Among the ongoing works in Ethiopia, nothing warms my heart like the Addis Ababa Riverside Development," he stated. He acknowledged that the extensive soil and water conservation efforts, particularly in areas like Entoto, may not be fully appreciated until completed.

He highlighted the significant terracing being done to protect millennia-old soil from erosion, an effort vital for future generations. While the full results may take 5 to 10 years to materialize, he envisioned an ecosystem adorned with indigenous trees, protected from water erosion. The Prime Minister expects to see substantial changes in the expansive riverside project, stretching from Entoto to Peacock, within the next few months, emphasizing its broad benefits beyond just environmental protection.
