Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie has launched the second phase of training at the city's Women's Rehabilitation and Skills Development Center, welcoming 400 women in a major boost for social justice and female empowerment.
This initiative, a beacon of hope for those who have faced unimaginable challenges, promises to transform lives and break cycles of poverty and exploitation.
These 400 women, survivors of prostitution and various social hardships, are now embarking on a journey of healing, education, and self-discovery. Their presence at the centre represents not just an opportunity for personal growth, but a powerful statement against the injustices that have plagued their lives.
The Mayor, visibly moved by the courage and determination of these women, took to social media to celebrate the milestone. "Today, we welcome 400 sisters and daughters who have endured immense hardship. We are committed to providing them with the tools they need to not only rebuild their lives but to emerge as leaders and change agents in their communities,” she declared.
The Center's impact is already tangible. Mayor Adanech proudly announced the success of the first training cohort, revealing that over 300 women had completed training across 17 diverse sectors. These women, once victims of circumstance, have now blossomed into skilled professionals tailors, chefs, beauticians, and more ready to contribute meaningfully to society and carve out brighter futures.
This triumph is a testament to the city's unwavering dedication to dismantling the deeply-rooted systems that perpetuate the cycle of vulnerability and exploitation. In her message, the Mayor extended gratitude to the generous investors, dedicated board members, and passionate staff and teachers whose expertise and commitment have made this vision a reality. “Your hard work and your unwavering dedication have made this vision a reality. On behalf of our sisters, I deeply thank you for your invaluable support,” she stated.
To the new trainees, Mayor Adanech offered words of encouragement and inspiration: “To our sisters who are embarking on this transformative journey, may your time at the centre be one of profound personal growth and change. I urge you to fully embrace the learning opportunities available to you and to strive for excellence in all that you do. Know that you have the power to become role models for your families and a beacon of hope for others.”
As these 400 women embark on this new chapter, Addis Ababa stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when a community unites to address social inequalities and invests in the dreams of its most vulnerable citizens, the Mayor underscored.
It was also noted that the Women’s Rehabilitation and Skills Development Center isn’t just about training; it’s about empowerment, healing, and the unwavering belief in the potential of every woman to rise above adversity.
