Ethiopia has taken a significant step towards securing its waterways with the imminent launch of its new Coastal Guard.

Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael has announced that the necessary preparations for the service have been completed, including the recruitment of personnel.

This move comes as a direct response to the growing need for a dedicated force to combat crimes on water.

"The police service on boats is essential to prevent crimes on water," stated Commissioner General Demelash.

According to ENA, the Coastal Guard has been meticulously organized to ensure the safety and security of Ethiopia's waterways, drawing inspiration from international best practices.

The announcement was made at a ceremony honoring police officers and members who excelled in crime prevention during the past fiscal year.

Commissioner General Demelash highlighted the importance of the Coastal Guard in safeguarding tourist destinations, particularly once the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is complete.

He also emphasized the role of the new force in building a more competent and competitive police organization for future challenges.

The Federal Police has already partnered with the Defense Engineering Industry Corporation to construct fast police boats, further demonstrating their commitment to equipping the Coastal Guard with the necessary resources to effectively carry out its duties.
