The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) was among several media organizations recognized for their contributions to national interests at an awards ceremony held at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa.
The event, organized by the Government Communication Service under the theme "Media for the Nation," saw 12 out of 69 nominated media outlets receive trophies and certificates from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
EBC was recognized for its contribution to preserving national interests and fostering the value of brotherhood through media. The corporation's Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Getnet Tadesse, received the trophy and certificate from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
In his address, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized the crucial role of media in Ethiopia's development. "We need media that considers our country's resources, natural endowments, and growth prospects from a national perspective," he stated.
The Prime Minister called on media outlets to prioritize issues that sustainably benefit the nation, urging them to work collaboratively on matters of national interest despite political or editorial differences. He stressed the importance of building national unity, constructing shared narratives, and promoting love to pass on positive values and actions to the next generation. He also encouraged media to move beyond merely supporting or opposing the government and instead focus on conveying the country's truth in a way that benefits future generations.
It was noted that the initiation of this recognition program would create opportunities for positive competition among institutions and should be continued and strengthened.
In addition to EBC, other public media sector awardees included the Ethiopian Press Agency, Oromia Broadcasting Network and Amhara Media Corporation. The Ethiopian News Agency received a special award, while Addis Media Network was presented with a certificate.
In the commercial media sector, Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Addis Walta, and Ethiopian Broadcasting Service were among the recipients.
