Reforming Global Financial Architecture, Africa’s External Debt among Agendas of COM2024

The upcoming United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (COM 2024) will shed light on the need to mobilize climate, green economy, development finance and the reform of the Global Financial Architecture including debt issues that African countries are facing, according to executive secretary of UNECA, Claver Gatete.

The announcement came Monday as UNECA and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Finance briefed media on the preparations for COM 2024 which is slated to take place from 28th of February to 5th of March 2024 in Victoria falls, Zimbabwe.

Themed “Financing the transition to inclusive green economies in Africa:  imperatives, opportunities and policy options,” COM 2024 will also try to bring about changes in technology in a bid to looking into the implementation of the SDGs and Agenda 2063, and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Claver Gatete pointed out.

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mthuli Ncube on his part said that COM 2024 will touch up the timely crisis in Africa including climate change and lagging technological challenges to lead the member states into action.

Debt resolution mechanism of African countries needs to be more effective, clear and modernized, the minister said, adding that the conference will add the debt resolution mechanism in reforming the global financial architecture.
