Ethiopian Media Authority Issues Ultimatum After Local Television Broadcasts 'Irresponsible' Content

By Daniel Kassahun

The Media Authority of Ethiopia issued a final letter of warning to Abay TV after the station aired programming that was deemed to violate community values and standards.

In the letter sent to the station, the authority took issue with a recently broadcast TV content on one of its shows called ‘ዋሸሁ እንዴ?' equivalent to "Did I Lie?" and found that it encroached on women's dignity, rights, and humanity. The content was also seen as detrimental to communal assets and encouraging crimes against women and teenagers.

The Authority indicated that through strict monitoring of broadcast media content in the country, it found evidence to support these conclusions on top of tips and complaints filed by members of the Ethiopian public about the show.

The letter expressed disappointment that previous discussions and consultations with the station did not lead to positive changes. The Authority further warned that other media outlets risk facing stern measures if they act in violation of regulations.
