Ethiopia and Algeria have significantly boosted their bilateral relations, forging a stronger partnership through the signing of key agreements at the conclusion of the 5th Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting held yesterday in Addis Ababa. The landmark meeting at the Skylight Hotel saw Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos and the Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf champion enhanced cooperation across a multitude of sectors, marking a new chapter in the two nations' shared history.
Both sides underscored the profound importance of the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) in deepening the long-standing relationship between their nations. Minister Timothewos highlighted the evolution of their ties, rooted in African principles and a shared commitment to Pan-Africanism. He enthusiastically pointed to the vast potential for increased trade and investment, with specific focus areas including the promising sectors of mining, education, tourism, and energy.
Echoing this sentiment, Algerian Foreign Minister Attaf emphasized the crucial role of their cooperation in advancing continental political unity and economic integration, extending beyond the mutual benefits for both Ethiopia and Algeria.
A key takeaway from the meeting was the mutual agreement on the necessity of regular political consultations and reciprocal official visits, deemed vital components of their strategic partnership. The landmark event saw the signing of comprehensive Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) spanning a wide array of crucial fields. These include agriculture, entrepreneurship and innovation, space science, pharmaceutical industries, sports and culture, investment promotion, and academic and scientific research. Adding another layer to their economic partnership, the establishment of a joint business council was also announced, paving the way for greater private sector engagement and collaboration.
