Ethiopian University students have emerged as the champions of the Huawei ‘Seeds for the Future Tech4Good Global’ competition, securing first place.
The competition, which took place from April 7 to April 17, 2025 G.C. and included visits to technology centers and practical training in Beijing and Shenzhen, China, announced its results on April 11, 2025 G.C.
The Ethiopian team, represented by six students, brought together talent from Addis Ababa, Haramaya, Jimma, Wolkite, and Addis Ababa Science and Technology Universities.
In the competition, they competed against 12 outstanding teams from across the globe, including those from Morocco, South Africa, Argentina, Ireland, Malawi, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, and more.
Ethiopian student Asiya Khalifa, the ambassador for ‘Seeds for the Future Global,’ also attended the event as a guest.
The students competed with their project called ‘EarlyVet,’ an initiative powered by artificial intelligence designed to detect animal diseases at an early stage, which garnered significant attention.
It was highlighted during the competition that this innovative project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2 "Zero Hunger" and Goal 15 "Life on Land," and is believed to address crucial challenges in agriculture and animal health.
Liming Ye, Huawei Ethiopia's Public Relations Director, expressed his delight at the team's success, stating that the victory demonstrates the exceptional talent and innovation of Ethiopian youth.
He further added Huawei's commitment to continuing to facilitate the support and opportunities needed for the next generation to flourish in the increasingly evolving technological landscape.
It is recalled that the team earned the opportunity to compete in the global competition after winning first place during the sub-regional Tech4Good competition held in May/June 2024 G.C. in Essaouira, Morocco, where they competed against 28 teams from 17 African countries.
Information from the Ministry of Education indicates that the Huawei ‘Seeds for the Future’ program, launched globally in 2008, organizes the national competition in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education and provides participating students with the opportunity to undergo comprehensive training in technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, 5G, cybersecurity, IoT, and big data, beyond the competition itself."
