Ethiopian Electric Power's Ambitious Plan to Boost Generation, Distribution, Exports

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation is undertaking the construction of power infrastructure projects that support national economic growth. According to Moges Mekonnen, Director of Corporate Communications, five power generation projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, are currently under construction to more than double the nation's power generation capacity.

Simultaneously, the expansion and modernization of distribution stations are underway, along with the construction of new distribution stations and transmission lines to ensure equitable and efficient electricity access.

Mekonnen highlighted the focus on increasing electricity access from the current 54% to 78% within the next five years.

Beyond meeting domestic energy needs, the Director stated that initiatives are underway to export electricity to Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan, with plans to soon begin supplying Tanzania. Although the share of electricity exported to neighboring countries is currently less than 10%, information from the corporation indicates that these exports account for over 30% of its revenue.
