CHAN 2018: Ethiopia rally to hold Sudan in Hawassa

(EBC; August 14, 2017) - Hosts Ethiopia rallied to hold Sudan 1-1 in the 2018 Kenya CHAN first leg last round qualifying tie at Hawassa International Stadium, Ethiopia Sunday.

After barren first half in which the visitors dominated, they finally broke the deadlock in the 75th minute through Mohammed Hagari.

Ethiopia, however, bounced back through Abdurahman Mubarek who restored parity with seven minutes left on the clock.

Sudan hosts the return in a week's time with the winner qualifying for the continental showpiece played strictly by home-based professionals.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea have become the first team to reach 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals after their opponents Gabon withdrew.

A statement posted by Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) on their official portal acknowledges the new development.

"Confederation of African Football (CAF) Director of Competitions, Emad Shenouda has sent a letter to us stating that Nzalang have earned qualification following a surprise withdrawal of Gabon," it reads.

Both teams were to meet yesterday in Malabo but the match was called off on Wednesday.
